Wield U9's vs Rowledge U9's, Saturday 28th June

Match abandoned after only one innings

What excitement (it was not raining)! What promise! But how sad – it started raining between the innings and we had to abandon the game, but not before such fireworks as we had not seen for some weeks at Wield.

Gilbert opened the bowling and took two wickets on his first two balls, the crowd roared as we waited for the hat-trick ball...which followed two balls later! Thomas started at the other end and bowled an excellent maiden, pegging Rowledge back to 186 after two overs. Gilbert returned, another two wickets fell and Rowledge were reeling! Oli and Ira eagerly stepped up to the crease and Oli immediately opened his account with a run out and then a magnificent caught and bowled, nothing was getting past Wield today, we were on fire. Ira took a run out in her opening over and Rowledge were left licking their wounds on 185-8 at half way. Ella and Alexander came in with Ella bowling a maiden and then taking a wicket in her two while Alexander organised a catch for Gilbert who could do no wrong today! Millie and Wilfred arrived and again, the wickets tumbled. While Millie held down one end Wilf plundered from the other and another three wickets fell just as the innings came to a close and the skies began to spit. The scorecard read 188-13, the most wickets Wield had taken in a single game this season and with Gilbert enjoying his first five-fer for the club.

Tea arrived and what a relief as the rain was now coming down hard. Allison and Carol did a marvellous job organising and presenting it all while Emma came up trumps again with the delicious flap-jacks and Carol’s brownies also vanished without a second look!

I walked over to the edge of the ground with Rowledge’s coach and the gunmetal grey skies over Upper Wield said it all, the rain was settling in and there was nothing we could do about it. Still, ever optimistic we waited (well, ate more flapjacks and drank more tea) before abandoning at 1130.
