Wield vs Medstead, Sunday 5th August

Weather - Summer is almost starting or finishing?

Match summary – For the first time in Wield history we hold both of the cups we play for....until the end of the game!!!

As always against Medstead with The Frank Shaw trophy at stake Yorkie's only real job was to win the toss and make sure we bat second
(so we could bat out for the usual draw!!!)
Alas he failed miserably and with Medstead playing there Saturday 1st team Wield were up against it before we started.

With the extremely rare sight of Yorkie opening the batting (feeling guilty for losing the toss maybe!!!) He and I walked down the hill to the sight of 3 slips and a gully. Guy and Andy opened the bowling and between them bowled 24 overs straight.

We made steady process thanks to some outside edges from Yorkie through the slips and a couple of nurdles from me. We passed 40 before Yorkies luck finally ran out and Guys had his man. This brought Will Frome to the crease, 2 balls later and Will was replaced by his father.

Andrew claimed to have not played for 2 years but it didn't show and our partnership grew until as often happens a long hop did for Frome Snr.

With no Lord Flasheart this week M H-T came in to play the fresh air swashbuckling role with predictable results (lots of swishes and no runs!!!)

Scott came and went before Hector and I managed to push the score to a rather gettable 120 at tea.

The teas were the best ever!!!! courtesy of my wife (she made me say that) and Margot.

Medstead started there innings as if it was a 10 over slog and our chances of holding on to the trophy were quickly slipping away, the bowling was tight and the slogs were frequent until Alex played one on to his own stumps. The slogs continued as did the wickets until Matt Rawlings came to the crease. With no respect for Aidan's tender age Matt smashed him out of the attack with a few sixes and the game was up or so we thought.

When Matt needlessly gave his wicket away and remembering Medstead's pathetic collapse 2 years ago we suddenly had a chance. Robin and Yorkie slowed the scoring and the wickets started to fall.

With the tension mounting and the overs running out Medstead were 8 down. Our thoughts turned to our wonderful last ball victory 3 weeks previous. Robin had other ideas though and with 6 needed from 7 balls remaining he bowled a pie to Medstead's no.10, Chris who had not hit the ball off the square despatched this gift into the pavilion and 6 years of holding the trophy had gone in the swing off a bat!!!!

Another great game against our closest rivals and a fun days cricket.
